10 Reasons Why Waxing Is Better Than Shaving

To wax or to shave? That is indeed a good question. Out of all the different hair removal options that exist nowadays, these two seem to be the most popular ones. Shaving is a fast and easy way to remove body and facial hair using razors or any other kind of bladed implements, while waxing removes the hair by applying either soft body waxes or hard body waxes onto the skin so that the hair sticks to it and can be pulled out. Each one of these hair removal procedures has its own pros and cons, but if we had to choose the one with the most benefits for the skin, there is only one winner: waxing.

Even though shaving might seem like the most effective alternative – it's fast, cheap, and it can be done anywhere without creating a big mess – when weighing all the pros and cons of each procedure, waxing ends up being the best option in the long run, regardless of its common inconveniences. Here are ten specific reasons why you should choose waxing as your primary hair removal method.

Waxing removes dead skin cells
Waxing not only removes hair, it also exfoliates your skin. When you pull out the wax from your skin, it takes away dead cells and leaves a brand-new layer of skin. This is why the body or face feels so smooth after waxing.

Long-lasting results
Shaving doesn't entirely remove hair, it just cuts off the hair shaft, which is only the visible part of the hair on the surface of the skin. But hairs are much longer than that; they grow from the hair follicle deep in the dermis (layer of skin below the epidermis). That's the reason why after shaving, fuzz grows back so quickly – in just one week hairs are visible again. On the other hand, waxing does remove hairs from the root; therefore, it takes a lot longer for hairs to grow back and be visible on the surface of the skin – from three to four weeks, depending on the person.

Hairs might cease to grow
Waxing mercilessly pulls hairs out from the root; this action weakens the hair follicles, and therefore, hairs grow back, but are less strong. Overtime, if you wax on a regular basis, hairs might actually stop growing because the hair follicle is too damaged to work properly.

Hairs grow back thinner
Given that waxing weakens the hair follicles, sometimes hairs start to grow much thinner, and they become easier to pull out – the procedure even gets less painful!

Smoother outcome
The final result after a waxing session is much smoother and attractive than any other kind of shaving method, especially because the hair is pulled out from the root.

No more hyperpigmentation
In case you didn't know, hyperpigmentation is a condition that develops when small areas of the skin become darker than the rest. These dark spots can appear on skin that has been shaved several times, depending on the person, his or her type of skin, and health condition. Sometimes, even dermatologists are required to solve the problem. This will never happen with waxing.

No more itching
Itchy legs, armpits, or pubic areas are a common problem for women and men even right after shaving. With waxing, this could be prevented by using high-quality, nourishing waxes that are made to treat and prevent said side effects.

No more cuts
You can say goodbye to razors and unintentional cuts on your skin. When shaving, you can seriously harm yourself when the blades are too sharp or if you're not paying attention to what you're doing. Although waxing can also be dangerous – skin burns can be caused by hot wax - there are plenty of spa businesses and hair removal specialists to which you can go to in case you don't feel confident enough to do it yourself.

Wide range of options
There are lots of different waxes on the market and plenty of spas that offer waxing services of good quality. Soft body waxes, hard body waxes, waxes with scents and moisturizing properties, products specially made for people with sensitive skin… Truly, the alternatives are endless.

Fast yet better results
We won't lie, shaving will always be the fastest way to remove hair, and you can get hairless legs, for example, in just ten minutes. However, waxing doesn't require much time either, and for the little extra time you're spending, you will get much better results.

In conclusion, while shaving can save you when all of a sudden you need to attend a party or any other kind of special event, after reading about the benefits of waxing you can see why we highly recommend waxing over all other hair removal options. Shaving might be the easiest way out, but it's certainly not the best!

Benefits of Cupping Therapy

Dr. Lisa Corsa, Physical Therapy, Osteopathy and Athletic Training, says cupping therapy has been around for so many years in Chinese medicine. "It moves stagnated fluid; when you do not move it, you lose it. The tissue and the blood flow gets stagnated, so when you suck up the skin, you also are sucking up the thin layer of connected tissue under the skin to help release the pressure to remove the dead tissues, to remove the dead fluid, and improve the circulation."

She points out it is a fantastic modality, not just for athletes, but for people playing softball with their friends on weekends, for example.

Hot Stone Massage vs. Deep Tissue | Hot Stone Massage

The difference between hot stone and deep tissue massage is essentially, that with hot stones, you're going to be using hot basalt stones. With the heated basalt stones, it's actually easier to access the muscle tissue much faster on a deeper level than with deep tissue massage.

So, that might be enjoyable in some circumstances. But, the big difference is though, and why some people might prefer deep tissue massage, is that you can access the body with the hands in a lot more variety of areas and with more nuance than you can with the stones.

The stones, while they provide you more depth faster, they actually limit the areas of the body that you can access comfortably. The other nice thing about a great tissue massage is that you're incorporating the flow of Swedish massage in between to sort of, give you that feels so good feeling in between that injury treatment.

Massage Therapy - Great for Tension Headaches!

There are not many experiences that feel better than a massage with a professional massage therapist! And because of the growing awareness of massage as a registered health care profession, more than likely you probably are already aware of some of the amazing health benefits. Some of these exceptionally helpful benefits include relief from:

  • anxiety and depression
  • back, leg and neck pain
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • edema
  • insomnia
  • athletic injury
  • asthma
  • chronic fatigue syndrome
  • fibromyalgia
  • and of course, headaches!

And if you suffer from headaches, you might agree that a massage can do wonders for this type of pain, especially when it's caused by tension. A tension headache (aka tension-type headache) is the most common type of a headache and can start in your shoulders, the back of your neck, behind your eyes, or even in other muscle groups in your body. Tension headaches can appear occasionally, or frequently - even daily. The severity of these types of headaches will vary, and is usually throbbing and present in the front, top, or sides of your head. These types of headaches are usually on both sides of your head and do not affect your vision, balance or strength. The causes of tension headaches can be any or a variety of the following:

  • stress, depression or anxiety
  • sleep issues
  • poor posture
  • poor diet
  • vision problems
  • teeth grinding
  • overexertion

Massage therapy is excellent for treating tension headaches when they are connected to muscular issues, which most tension headaches are. The muscles usually involved with tension headaches may include your trapezius, levator scapulae, sternocleidomastoid, and scalenes (i.e. neck and shoulder muscles), or possibly your temporalis muscle (used for chewing and covering most of your temporal bone on the side of your head), or even your orbicularis oculi muscle (whose action is to close your eye, and is very easy to massage).

Massage is excellent for pain and discomfort associated with tension-type headaches. By applying professional massage techniques such as pressure, movement, and stretching, your therapist helps to relax your muscles and make you more comfortable. For tension headaches, they may need to do more deep-tissue massage, which further helps improve circulation and reduces the pain and tension in your muscles. The improved circulation helps reduce inflammation, which often occurs in muscles that are irritated and causing you pain. Massage can also help to release endorphins, the 'feel good' chemicals in your brain that lower stress levels and help you relax.

If you are experiencing frequent headaches and are concerned, see your doctor to rule out a more serious condition. Once determined that your headaches are likely to be muscle-related, seeking out the help of a registered massage therapist is the next smart step to take.

Reuniting The Mind Body Connection

At Atma we want to assure you that we are taking steps to make sure that our spa is sanitized at all times. We are wiping down doorknobs, face rest, bathroom facilities, and take our most care in personal hygiene including handwashing for at least 20 seconds.

If you have the following symptoms : Fever, cough, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing please stay home.

Apart from not wanting to spread the disease, if symptomatic, massage can increase severity of illness.

It is a good idea to do the following to reduce the transmission of this virus and others. According to the CDC this includes:

• Handwashing often with soap and water and at least for 20 seconds. This includes the upper and lower hand and the nail beds. Especially when going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose coughing or sneezing.

• If handwashing is not available, use and alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. If hands are visibly dirty always wash with soap and water. You can make hand sanitizer with rubbing alcohol and aloe vera gel, and if rubbing alcohol is not available in the store, vodka can be substituted.

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick. People who are sick should be isolated to their room, and if possible should use her own bathroom.

• Avoid touching your face especially your eyes, nose, and mouth.

• Stay home when you’re sick.

• Coughing or sneezing should be done in to the inside of your elbow.

• Avoid shaking hands with other people. Fist bumps and elbow taps are acceptable.

• It is thought that contact with surfaces is a way that the virus is spread so be careful and wipe down surfaces regularly with a disinfectant cleaning spray

If you have any questions or concerns we are here for you.

Kind Regards,
Mary Sullivan
Owner/Massage Specialist
