Why Waxing is Better Than Shaving

Thinking about trying waxing instead of shaving? Learn a few of the reasons why waxing is the better option.

100 Years of Fake Eyelashes | Allure

Take a look back at the last hundred years of women's false eyelashes. With the invention of the Kurlash being too-expensive in the 1920s, women eventually found quicker and more affordable eyelash extensions in the 1930s. In the 1950s film stars influenced a more doe-eyed look and by the 1970s women went for a less dramatic mascara from Maybelline. By the 2000s big and colorful lashes became so popular that "lash bars" opened up to meet the demand for a budding false eyelash industry.

10 Reasons Why Waxing Is Better Than Shaving

To wax or to shave? That is indeed a good question. Out of all the different hair removal options that exist nowadays, these two seem to be the most popular ones. Shaving is a fast and easy way to remove body and facial hair using razors or any other kind of bladed implements, while waxing removes the hair by applying either soft body waxes or hard body waxes onto the skin so that the hair sticks to it and can be pulled out. Each one of these hair removal procedures has its own pros and cons, but if we had to choose the one with the most benefits for the skin, there is only one winner: waxing.

Even though shaving might seem like the most effective alternative – it's fast, cheap, and it can be done anywhere without creating a big mess – when weighing all the pros and cons of each procedure, waxing ends up being the best option in the long run, regardless of its common inconveniences. Here are ten specific reasons why you should choose waxing as your primary hair removal method.

Waxing removes dead skin cells
Waxing not only removes hair, it also exfoliates your skin. When you pull out the wax from your skin, it takes away dead cells and leaves a brand-new layer of skin. This is why the body or face feels so smooth after waxing.

Long-lasting results
Shaving doesn't entirely remove hair, it just cuts off the hair shaft, which is only the visible part of the hair on the surface of the skin. But hairs are much longer than that; they grow from the hair follicle deep in the dermis (layer of skin below the epidermis). That's the reason why after shaving, fuzz grows back so quickly – in just one week hairs are visible again. On the other hand, waxing does remove hairs from the root; therefore, it takes a lot longer for hairs to grow back and be visible on the surface of the skin – from three to four weeks, depending on the person.

Hairs might cease to grow
Waxing mercilessly pulls hairs out from the root; this action weakens the hair follicles, and therefore, hairs grow back, but are less strong. Overtime, if you wax on a regular basis, hairs might actually stop growing because the hair follicle is too damaged to work properly.

Hairs grow back thinner
Given that waxing weakens the hair follicles, sometimes hairs start to grow much thinner, and they become easier to pull out – the procedure even gets less painful!

Smoother outcome
The final result after a waxing session is much smoother and attractive than any other kind of shaving method, especially because the hair is pulled out from the root.

No more hyperpigmentation
In case you didn't know, hyperpigmentation is a condition that develops when small areas of the skin become darker than the rest. These dark spots can appear on skin that has been shaved several times, depending on the person, his or her type of skin, and health condition. Sometimes, even dermatologists are required to solve the problem. This will never happen with waxing.

No more itching
Itchy legs, armpits, or pubic areas are a common problem for women and men even right after shaving. With waxing, this could be prevented by using high-quality, nourishing waxes that are made to treat and prevent said side effects.

No more cuts
You can say goodbye to razors and unintentional cuts on your skin. When shaving, you can seriously harm yourself when the blades are too sharp or if you're not paying attention to what you're doing. Although waxing can also be dangerous – skin burns can be caused by hot wax - there are plenty of spa businesses and hair removal specialists to which you can go to in case you don't feel confident enough to do it yourself.

Wide range of options
There are lots of different waxes on the market and plenty of spas that offer waxing services of good quality. Soft body waxes, hard body waxes, waxes with scents and moisturizing properties, products specially made for people with sensitive skin… Truly, the alternatives are endless.

Fast yet better results
We won't lie, shaving will always be the fastest way to remove hair, and you can get hairless legs, for example, in just ten minutes. However, waxing doesn't require much time either, and for the little extra time you're spending, you will get much better results.

In conclusion, while shaving can save you when all of a sudden you need to attend a party or any other kind of special event, after reading about the benefits of waxing you can see why we highly recommend waxing over all other hair removal options. Shaving might be the easiest way out, but it's certainly not the best!

Massage Therapy - Great for Tension Headaches!

There are not many experiences that feel better than a massage with a professional massage therapist! And because of the growing awareness of massage as a registered health care profession, more than likely you probably are already aware of some of the amazing health benefits. Some of these exceptionally helpful benefits include relief from:

  • anxiety and depression
  • back, leg and neck pain
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • edema
  • insomnia
  • athletic injury
  • asthma
  • chronic fatigue syndrome
  • fibromyalgia
  • and of course, headaches!

And if you suffer from headaches, you might agree that a massage can do wonders for this type of pain, especially when it's caused by tension. A tension headache (aka tension-type headache) is the most common type of a headache and can start in your shoulders, the back of your neck, behind your eyes, or even in other muscle groups in your body. Tension headaches can appear occasionally, or frequently - even daily. The severity of these types of headaches will vary, and is usually throbbing and present in the front, top, or sides of your head. These types of headaches are usually on both sides of your head and do not affect your vision, balance or strength. The causes of tension headaches can be any or a variety of the following:

  • stress, depression or anxiety
  • sleep issues
  • poor posture
  • poor diet
  • vision problems
  • teeth grinding
  • overexertion

Massage therapy is excellent for treating tension headaches when they are connected to muscular issues, which most tension headaches are. The muscles usually involved with tension headaches may include your trapezius, levator scapulae, sternocleidomastoid, and scalenes (i.e. neck and shoulder muscles), or possibly your temporalis muscle (used for chewing and covering most of your temporal bone on the side of your head), or even your orbicularis oculi muscle (whose action is to close your eye, and is very easy to massage).

Massage is excellent for pain and discomfort associated with tension-type headaches. By applying professional massage techniques such as pressure, movement, and stretching, your therapist helps to relax your muscles and make you more comfortable. For tension headaches, they may need to do more deep-tissue massage, which further helps improve circulation and reduces the pain and tension in your muscles. The improved circulation helps reduce inflammation, which often occurs in muscles that are irritated and causing you pain. Massage can also help to release endorphins, the 'feel good' chemicals in your brain that lower stress levels and help you relax.

If you are experiencing frequent headaches and are concerned, see your doctor to rule out a more serious condition. Once determined that your headaches are likely to be muscle-related, seeking out the help of a registered massage therapist is the next smart step to take.

The Exact Order You Should Apply Your Skincare Products — Before Makeup | The Real Deal | InStyle

As it turns out, the order you apply your skincare products matters — a lot. For each product to be effective, you need to follow a lineup that doesn’t cancel out the previous products benefits. Think about it: Why would you slather on that expensive anti-aging moisturizer you splurged on and then wipe it away with cleanser?

Another factor to throw into the equation is the time of day you find yourself standing in front of your medicine cabinet. Yep, your skin has different needs in the morning than it does at night.

Figuring out what skincare steps are essential, and the sequence you should do them in can seem confusing, but spare yourself the flow chart diagram. To make your daytime skincare routine a little clearer, we turned to beauty expert Marsha Page to find out the correct order in which you should be applying your skincare products. Take a look!

This Regimen Can Help You Get Better Skin in 24 Hours

When my skin is dull or breaking out, I want a fast fix. (I'm impatient, OK?) And although as I've gotten older, I've become less obsessed with the idea of perfection, I still wish there was a way to ensure my skin could look good in a matter of hours, if needed.

So, the bad news: there's not an instant way to get clear skin, unless you have immediate access to a dermatologist, and still, it takes time to see the positive side effects of what they might administer.

The good news: there are certain things you can do within a 24-hour time frame to help make your skin glow, from creating a DIY sleeping mask to changing up your morning routine. Check out each step in the 24-hour regimen.

Benefits And Facts: Body Polish Treatment

A body polish is a treatment of the entire body, just like a facial and unlike a massage. It hydrates and exfoliates the skin. When the dead skin is removed, the skin becomes soft and smooth. It can be done with any type of material such as sugar, salt, rice bran, coffee grounds or pecan hulls, which are usually mixed with massage oil as well as essential oils. When salt is used for treating the skin then the treatment is known as salt glow, salt scrub or sea salt scrub. This treatment is usually completed with a shower and an application of lotion.

What Are Its Benefits?

  1. This procedure is unlike a massage, which is solely done for the purpose of relaxation or pleasure. This technique is performed to obtain many benefits. One of the most common benefits is that this treatment exfoliates the dead skin cells.
  2. Removing dead skin cells is important because dead skin layers tend to make a person’s face and body appear unhealthy, dull and unattractive. It can also diminish the effects of topical beauty and health products. A polished skin not only tends to look attractive, but it also tends to feel fresh.
  3. The skin will be softer, smoother and supple after the procedure.
  4. Not just that, it will be more moisturized and hydrated than before the treatment.
  5. This procedure will remove oil and dirt buildup that blocks the skin pores.
  6. It also stimulates the skin cells to generate fresh, healthier layers of skin.
  7. There are some supporters of alternative healing who believe that this procedure has numerous therapeutic benefits.

Some Facts About This Treatment

  • Body polish refers to a beauty technique that includes getting rid of dead skin cells. It is also sometimes used to indicate beauty products that are made use of in this technique.
  • This treatment can be performed in a spa or even at home. Though one can do it at home, help of another person is needed because it can be very difficult for you to properly polish all the areas of your body. If there is nobody present in your household to offer assistance, then it is best to get the treatment done at a spa.
  • Some spas perform this treatment in a room without a shower. They remove the exfoliating formula with a steamed towel.
  • This treatment can be done on its own, but most of the times it is done after a body wrap, often a mud or seaweed wrap.
  • Sometimes, it can be combined with a massage. In this case, the polish is done first because it is stimulating. It is followed by a massage. A massage calms you down.
  • Body polish is a product that is needed to perform this treatment. It is also referred to as an exfoliator or a scrub.
  • Such products contain some type of rough and coarse elements, such as nutshells or salt mixed with oil or a cream.
  • Exfoliating agents can be harsh on skin. Even some therapists can have a heavy hand. Some individuals can be sensitive to certain things. These factors can irritate your skin. If it happens, speak up.
  • The treatment usually involves one person laying straight flat on a platform while the other person is polishing the backside of her body. This polishing is then continued onto the front side. Some parts are excluded from polishing. They are the face and genital areas.
  • After the polishing session, the person gets up and rinses herself. Rinsing is different from washing. It is solely meant to get rid of abrasive particles present in the product. Rinsing will not remove the moisturizing agents and oils that are present in the product when it is applied on the body during the treatment.
  • After the person rinses herself, the therapist rubs more cream, oil, or lotion on the skin. This completes the procedure.

5 Benefits of a Body Scrub

Warm weather is on its way and it's time to slough off the effects of winter! Give your skin new life and healthy glow with a body scrub for summer. A body scrub can go a long way in restoring your skin’s luster.

Here are five reasons to get a body scrub.

1. Removes Dead Skin Cells
There are plenty of products and services that can improve the look and feel of your skin. However, a body scrub goes beyond the surface level to remove dead skin and reveal the healthy, glowing skin below. The skin is exfoliated, working through the rough layer and bringing out your softer skin below.

2. Refreshes Your Appearance to Increase Confidence
As the dead skin cells are removed, rough-looking skin and impurities are removed along with them. Those who are experiencing skin discoloration as a result of tanning or blemishes often find that body scrubs serve as a solution. When your skin looks and feels great, your confidence will often instantly improve. You'll leave your spa treatment looking and feeling your best.

3. Promotes Skin Hydration
After receiving a body scrub, your skin will be able to better absorb moisturizers. Moisturizing after a scrub will leave your skin feeling soft and supple. The change will be instantly noticeable and will continue to improve as you moisturize daily.

4. Clears Blemishes
Body scrubs don't just make your skin look and feel fantastic – they also improve the health of your skin. When dead skin builds up, it can clog pores and cause blemishes to appear on the surface of your skin. Exfoliating the skin and removing that dead skin often lessens the frequency of body acne.

5. Reduces Stress
The body scrub experience, along with a massage and facial, is a great way to relax and release stress. The calming spa experience helps your mind and body recover from a long winter and prepare for the season ahead.

10 Reasons to Wax Instead of Shave

Shaving is a rather inefficient method of removing unwanted hair from the body. Depending on how fast your hair grows, you could end up shaving daily just to keep up with the growth. Fortunately, there is an alternative to shaving. Many people find waxing to be a better option for several reasons.

Deep Tissue Massage - Muscle Tendon & Ligament Relief

Deep Tissue Massage or myofascial release is a massage technique that focuses on releasing restrictions in the deeper layers of the muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
Deep tissue massage releases chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas.
Using slow strokes and deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles, not with the grain, deep tissue massage first warms the soft tissue before targeting deeper muscles groups.
Deep Tissue Massage - How Does it Work?
Deep tissue massage is both corrective and therapeutic. It uses two methods, direct or indirect and is effective in releasing deeply-held patterns of tension, removing toxins, relaxing and soothing muscles.
The direct method applies pressure to the muscle with the intention of finding resistance in the body and maintaining the pressure until the resistance is released.
The indirect method moves in the opposite direction of the resistance.
With both techniques, the amount of pressure applied is dependent on the amount of resistance.
Fingertips, knuckles, hands, elbows, and forearms are all used with long, slow strokes.
Because of the focus on a specific area, some clients find deep tissue massage uncomfortable and it may cause some soreness during or after.
Providing the massage is carried out correctly any soreness should disappear in a day or two.
Deep tissue massage does not require great strength, nor does it need to be painful and applying pressure for the sake of it can be ineffectual if done incorrectly.
Of the two methods, direct and indirect, there are many different combinations.
Some of the more well known include:-
o Polarity Therapy
o Thai Massage
o Triggerpoint Therapy
What are the benefits of a Deep Tissue Massage?
Unlike a regular relaxation massage, deep tissue massage works effectively on the skeletal structures that lie deep within the body.
Many people seek a deep tissue massage to help in treating crippling diseases, muscle, tendon and ligament injuries.
When muscles are stressed, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue.
Through controlled manual manipulation, deep tissue massage breaks down scar tissue and crystallization, loosens muscles, releases toxins and allows blood and oxygen to circulate properly.
It is important to drink plenty of water afterward to flush away the toxins released during a massage.
The key benefits of deep tissue massage include:
o Elimination of the blocks that cause muscle tightness
o Increases circulation of blood, lymph, cerebrospinal and interstitial fluids
o Can resolve many chronic pain patterns by releasing deeply held emotions that cause tension
o Helps improve the functioning of the internal organs and any associated symptoms or diseases
o Improves posture and mobility
o Helps to reduce tension and the automatic reflexes to stress
How effective is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage can be very effective, but one has to be realistic about how much can be achieved in one session.
Simply asking for more pressure and thinking that if the therapist pushes hard enough, all tension will be released within an hour is unrealistic.
Chronic knots and tension built up over a lifetime can only be addressed with a series of treatments.
Most therapists will offer advice on a program that includes exercise, work on your posture, relaxation techniques and a regular program of massage.
Is Deep Tissue Massage Safe for Everyone?
As with most massage treatments, deep tissue massage is not recommended for certain people.
Massage should not be done directly over bruised or inflamed skin, open wounds, tumors, areas of recent fracture, abdominal hernia, rashes or skin disease.
It should also be avoided by:
o People with cardiovascular conditions and heart disease especially in cases of thrombosis, phlebitis and oedema
o Pregnant women and people with osteoporosis should consult their doctor before considering a massage
o Immediately after surgery
o Immediately after chemotherapy or radiation, unless recommended by your doctor
Deep Tissue Massage - Choosing a Therapist
When considering a deep tissue massage, ensure you choose a therapist you feel comfortable with and one that comes from a reputable organization.
Salons, spas, health and fitness clubs typically offer deep tissue massage, or you contact a mobile spa and have a deep tissue massage in the comfort of your own home.

What Are the Benefits of a Facial for Teenagers?

It’s a fact that most teenagers will experience clogged pores, acne and breakouts at some point during their teen years. Despite being busy with school, their social life, and sports, it’s very important for them to learn the importance of good skin care.

If you have a teen or if you are a teen reading this, here are reasons why you should consider a teen facial:

What are the benefits of a teen facial?

There are many benefits of facials, but for teens in particular, facials will help clean out blackheads and clogged pores caused by oil production. Skin care products used at home can only help reduce clogged pores. It takes a professional esthetician to properly prepare and soften the skin before manual extractions can take place in a safe and effective way.

Also, facials are geared to problem solve. The level of the intensity of a facial is contingent on the severity of the skin’s issues. Teens tend to have problem skin, but what works for some might not work for others. An esthetician can offer advice on the best way to address a teen’s specific skin concerns.

Part of getting a facial is receiving a lesson from experts on how to care for the skin properly. This information includes which products will work best for each person based on his or her skin type

What age is best for a teen facial?

During the teenage years, hormones start to fluctuate which aggravates the skin and can cause breakouts. Those who produce a lot of oil and/or have weak follicular walls will experience more severe breakouts, including stubborn cystic acne. That being said, age 13 is a good time for teens to start coming in for facials. Even if problem skin isn’t yet an issue, it’s a good time to start teaching teenagers how to care for their skin.

What does a teen facial include? A teen facial at Art of Skin Care includes a thorough skin analysis to determine the teen’s skin type and needs of his or her skin. The skin is gently exfoliated using enzymes to loosen and digest away dry cells and prepare the skin for deep pore cleansing. Warm towels are also included to soften the pores, which will allow for gentle manual extractions. A customized mask appropriate for the skin type is then applied and the facial is finished with an oil-free lotion. During the facial, the ways in which diet and lifestyle can affect the skin are also discussed, as well as suggestions about how to care for the skin at home with simple, but effective routines.

How often should teens have facials? This truly depends on the skin issues of each teen. Depending on the severity of problem skin, we recommend every 2 weeks for those who have plenty of issues with acne and every 4 months for maintaining healthy, clear skin.
